Let me get home on time tonight

There is a train that knows when I'm on my way home from a long day at work. And as soon as the tracks are in sight, and I think I'm in the clear, it turns on those stupid red lights and the other side is so close, yet so, so far away. It does this to make me mad. I know it.

Leaves

I'm wondering when I'm going to walk away from an assignment, start my engine and drive away feeling completely satisfied. I'm only satisfied when I'm looking through the viewfinder. Then as soon as I leave I think of all the things I should have done.

The fairy and the princess wanted the lion's attention and giggled at him, but he was in his own world.

I didn't know why I was drawn to this scene, why it was so interesting. When I finally made the connection, it only broke at my heart for a split second.

This last one is for Noah Scalin. Thanks for signing your book for me today and for inspiring me. Not a half hour after your talk, I found my first skull.(View Noah's project here, please.)

Negativity

I am a flamingo.

Two years ago I met this pigeon who thought my
pink feathers were nice, so he lured me into this
small cage where he kept me as his pet. I tried
to show him that I was more than hot feathers and
long legs, but he didn't need that.

He just wanted something to look at in his free time.

The seasons changed and the pigeon migrated, leaving
me alone, feathers dulled from my days enclosed in
that trap. But I got out. I realized pigeons just
get temporarily distracted by shiny things, while
I get distracted by the things that matter, like my
family. So I flew home, where time took it's time and
my color came back.

These are photos of negatives. Sent all the way to
Kansas to be processed, the film captured tiny squares
of the dullest time of my life. When I noticed a tiny
glimmer of being pulled out of that cage, I took a
picture. Though time has passed, holding that strip
of negatives sucks me back into the very scene they
hold.

I am relieved to never live those days again.
If a time machine was invented and I was paid a
million dollars to go back, I still wouldn't do it!
NEVER!

Every now and then, I think of that pigeon.
When a bird shits on my wind shield.

Clyde vs. St. Mary's

More football. At least it wasn't pouring, like last night...

Tonight I looked down and my monopod was standing in a puddle of spit. Grrrr. Football.

Stein Hospice is a great place. Stan Fischer and his dog Tiki volunteer at the hospice for a new pet therapy program called Paws Up. Sarah Weber wrote a great article on the subject.

SPORTS

During sporting events, my bag full of gear hangs on my shoulder and threatens to snap my collarbone in half. I'm probably the funniest looking thing on the sidelines and more entertaining to watch fumble with lenses than the high schooler's fumbling with the footballs. Anyway, it's not as bad as I thought it would be.

"You work for Fandy?"
"Yeah I work for the Register."
"So is that what you want to do when you grow up? Photography?"
"Yeah, but I'm kinda already grown up."
"Aren't you, like, 16?"
"No, I'm 20."
"Can I get your number?"
"Aren't you, like, 16?"

I don't hate shooting sports like I thought I did. I just hate the equipment making me look smaller than I really am.

Monica Rose

I had seen photos of Monica Rose around town, on bottles that collect money to help pay for her medical bills. But when I met her yesterday, I hadn't seen from those photos how gorgeous she is. Both the writer, Cory, and I were so impressed with how the 17-year-old held herself and how positive she was. She has been inspired by her nurses to work in the medical field and just by meeting her, I can tell this is a girl who will conquer whatever she wants, whether it be cancer or medical school.

A fundraiser for Monica will be held this Saturday from noon to 8pm at the Huron County Fairgrounds in Norwalk. To read more about Monica's story, Cory wrote a great article that also has information on how to donate if you are unable to attend Saturday. Here is the link.

I've been back from Colorado for a week, but it has taken me that long to find a good internet connection. I found it at Lynn Marie's, which is one of the best places ever. I started my internship at the Sandusky Register on Tuesday and I love it so far. The whole feel of being on a team with the people I work with is exciting. Anyway, here are some animals we spotted while roaming in Colorado.

One of only a handful of photos I took before I got too confused with trying to take pictures and being her sister. Until my mom told me to relax and put my camera down. That was great advice.

Pink Panties Drag Racing

The final product for Chad Stevens multimedia class. I learned so much from taking his class and I learned a lot from hanging out with the Shermans. I want to thank them for allowing me to tag along with them to the girl's races and for letting me into their lives.

In a sport of dirt and gasoline and competition made for boys, sisters Maya and Macy Sherman race against the norm with Pink Panties Drag Racing.
